Receptacle Outlet Height From Floor

Electrical receptacle outlets on branch circuits of 30 amperes or less and communication system receptacles shall be located no more than 48 inches 1219 mm measured from the top of the receptacle outlet box nor less than 15 inches 381 mm measured from the bottom of the receptacle outlet box to the level of the finished floor or working platform.

Commonly recetpacles are installed 12 18 inches above floor height. In rare instances outlets are still installed in baseboards and in the floor with proper box covers. In basements garages and workshops it is often common to see them installed about 48 inches above the floor. The americans with disabilities act on the other hand specifies 15.

The ada specifies a minimum of 15 inches 380 mm from the floor and depending on circumstances the maximum height being between 48 and 54 inches approx. A common height for a wall outlet is between 12 to 16 inches to the bottom of the device. For example in canada the center of the receptacle box must be at least 14 inches above the floor and in california the bottom of the box must be at least 15 inches above the floor. The ada also establishes guidelines for the placement of outlets above counters and in other places that are hard to reach for people confined to wheelchairs.

California also sets a maximum height 48 inches to the top of the box the same as required by the ada. Seemed out of place. Todays inspection had receptacles installed about 48 inches above the floor in a bedroom. The nec has no official requirement concerning the height of a receptacle above any finished floor including the kitchen floor.

I recommend that we all measure 19 to the top from the sub floor. This allows for hardwood floor installation. 1 2 1 4 m. Ada says 15 min for receptacles.
